Touch screen technology is a type of user interface that allows users to interact directly with a device by touching its screen. Instead of using a keyboard, mouse, or stylus, you can control the device by tapping, swiping, pinching, or dragging your fingers (or other objects) on the screen.
Touch screens detect the presence and location of a touch on the display surface. There are several types of touch screen technologies, each working a bit differently:
Made of multiple layers, including two thin, flexible sheets with a gap in between.
When you press on the screen, the layers make contact, completing a circuit and telling the device where you touched.
Pros: Inexpensive and works with a finger, stylus, or glove.
Cons: Less responsive and not very durable.
Uses the electrical properties of the human body to detect touch.
When your finger touches the screen, it changes the electrical charge at that location.
Pros: Highly responsive, supports multi-touch gestures, more durable.
Cons: Doesn’t work well with gloves or non-conductive objects (unless specially designed).
Uses a grid of infrared light beams across the screen.
When you touch the screen, your finger interrupts the beams, and the device determines the location.
Pros: Can detect any object that interrupts the light.
Cons: Can be affected by dirt or light interference.
Uses sound waves that travel across the screen.
A touch interrupts the waves and the position is calculated.
Pros: High image clarity and good touch sensitivity.
Cons: Easily affected by dirt, dust, and moisture.
