OLED VS AMOLED: Which is better?

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) are two different display technologies, each with its own advantages. Which one is better depends on the specific application scenario and user needs.

Advantages of OLED

Low power consumption: OLED screens have the characteristics of self-luminescence, that is, each pixel can emit light independently, without the need for a backlight, so it consumes almost no power when displaying black or dark colors, making the overall power consumption low.

Wide viewing angle: The viewing angle range of OLED screens is very wide, generally up to about 170 degrees, so that the color and brightness can be consistent when viewing the screen at different angles.

Fast response speed: The response speed of OLED screens is very fast, with a response time of only microseconds, which is suitable for displaying dynamic images and high-speed videos.

Thin and light: OLED screens are made of organic materials, which are lighter and thinner than traditional LCD screens, making them easy to carry and install.

Advantages of AMOLED

Bright colors: AMOLED screens perform well in color display, can provide higher brightness and more saturated colors, making the picture more vivid and realistic.

High contrast: AMOLED screens also have a high contrast ratio, with deep black and pure white, providing a better visual experience.

High energy efficiency: Since the AMOLED screen uses active matrix technology, each pixel can be controlled independently, so the light emission of the pixel can be controlled more accurately during display, which improves energy efficiency.

Advanced technology: AMOLED technology is an advanced form of OLED technology, which contains additional layers to control the display of each pixel on the screen, so it is more advanced at the technical level.

Disadvantages of each

OLED: Although OLED screens perform well in terms of power consumption, viewing angle and response speed, long-term use may cause screen burn-in problems, that is, some pixels are damaged due to long-term display of the same image. In addition, the color purity and pixel density of OLED screens may also be relatively low.

AMOLED: AMOLED screens are also at risk of burn-in, and their cost is relatively high due to the use of more advanced technology. In addition, the resolution of AMOLED screens may be slightly worse than that of LCD screens, and the use of shared sub-pixel pentile arrangement may cause burrs and "color fringing" on the edges. At low brightness, AMOLED screens use PWM dimming, which may cause eye fatigue and discomfort.

Summary

OLED and AMOLED each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and users should weigh them according to their specific needs and budget when choosing. If you need lower power consumption, wider viewing angle and faster response speed, OLED may be a good choice. If you pursue higher color saturation, contrast and energy efficiency, as well as a more advanced technical experience, AMOLED is more suitable.
